Vital Statistics
Full name: Brian Anthony Boitano
Birthdate: October 22, 1963
Birthplace: Mountain View, California
Height: 5 feet 11 inches
Weight: 170 pounds
Eye Color: Hazel
Brian has won over 50 titles in his career.
He likes animals, especially dogs.
Brian's skating was Linda Ronstadt's inspiration when she arranged the vocals for her song, The Blue Train.
His favorite books in elementary school were, Green Eggs and Ham, James and the Giant Peach, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
In 1999, the Professional Skaters Association awarded Brian the Gustav Lussi Award. This award is given to a male professional skater who "has brought recognition to skating in a positive and favorable manner".
Brian says that his musical tastes are "eclectic", and he likes most types of music. He has a huge CD collection and says that he's always looking for new music to skate to.
He was inducted into both the U.S. and World figure skating halls of fame in 1996.
Besides skating, he also enjoys skiing, tennis, biking and rollerblading.
He was only 11 years old when he landed his first triple jump-- a triple Salchow.
In 1990, he won an Emmy award for his portrayal of "Don Jose" in Carmen on Ice.
His Olympic gold medal is in a safe-deposit box in a bank, and he likes to visit it on occasion-- although he recently admitted that he hasn't done so in a long while.
The Professional Skaters' Cooperative named Brian Role Model of the Year in 1998.
The National Italian American Foundation's Who's Who included Brian in its year 2000 edition.
Mandy Patinkin, of The Princess Bride and Broadway fame, is his favorite actor. His favorite actresses are Meryl Streep and the late Audrey Hepburn.
He landed his first triple Axel at the age of 17.
He was the first (and only, so far) male skater to be featured by himself, on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
In 1983 at the World Championships, Brian was the first skater to land all six different triple jumps in his long program!
A few of his current favorite TV shows are Prison Break, Ugly Betty and 24.
He was the first American to land a triple Axel in competition! He accomplished this at the age of 18 at the 1982 U.S. Championships.
In 1988, he was the first American male athlete to have his own TV special, Canvas of Ice.
He has his own skating production company, White Canvas Productions.
He's an avid reader.
He has been awarded more perfect scores of 6.0 in the U.S. Nationals than any other male skater! He has also scored more perfect 10's in professional competition than any other male skater.
In 2000, Brian and choreographer Marguerite Derricks were nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy Award for the number, Wild Elephants.
Brian is # 3 on SwimSport magazine's "Top 10 Olympic Athletes of the 20th Century".
His parents almost named him "Kent Mitchell Boitano".
Brian has taken up a new hobby, painting. He especially enjoys painting with acrylics.
Brian says he'd have studied to become an architect if he weren't a skater.
